MIGRANT VOICES

About
Contact

Amsterdam is a city of migrants, but rarely do they speak up and share their stories. Migrant Voices is a storytelling project collecting testimonies of first-generation migrants living in the city. Stories are told through text and podcasts. Migrants speak about why they came to the Netherlands, the lives they built, and the impact they have on the city and country. When many in the Netherlands and around the world turn their backs on migrants, we listen to their voices.

Project Description
For 750 years, Amsterdam has been a haven for migrants. People coming for new business opportunities, those fleeing persecution, and anyone wanting a better life have decided for centuries to make Amsterdam their home. The same is true today. At a time when, around the world, migrants are under attack, Amsterdam remains a safe haven for groups looking for a new home (whether temporarily or permanently). When more than 50% of the residents have a migration background, it is important that their stories are heard, that their Amsterdam is recorded.

Migrant Voices is a photography storytelling project initiated to document the experiences of Amsterdam’s migrant population. These groups rarely raise their voices and their stories go unrecorded, whether high-skilled recent arrivals or migrant workers from 30 years ago. Each story was collected through an interview and edited into a short text and podcast episode. Full interview transcripts are available upon request.
